farewell, burmese money tree.
My bro, our friends and I used to frequent the Burmese resto on 7th st that closed about a year ago. One year later (and one move- right next door-!) Sara Jenkin’s Porsena pasta place now occupies the abandoned space; and I have no excuse not to go, as it is my neighbor (I reiterate: !).
The Robs say of it:
The pasta al pomodoro is a minimalist pleasure, cooked firm but tender and...

get it while it's hot.
(Or, just be seen there while the scene’s hot.)
In the vein of an Ace Hotel post - see below - one of the investors has opened a new coffee bar in Meatpacking, ‘Kava’, serving Stumptown on a freakin’ beautiful espresso machine. And the place itself was designed by the guys who did Ace (Roman & Williams), and, Sifton’s little-engine-that-should: Lyon; it’s...
It’s the hotel as hipster mall.

Quality food hybrid? Sweet. Blue cheese buttercream frosting garnished with a chicken wing? Bastardization.
When pop-up shops meet food trends: everybody loses.

Sandra Lee, is that you?
GRILLED CHEESE MARTINI. What’s worse: the fact that it exsists, the fact that someone thought of it as a valid invention, or the fact the T Magazine wrote about it?! (I sense some irony in my blogging about it, but hey, that’s cultural critique and America’s first Amendment at its finest.)
Anyway, where else would this drink come from - Canada. The drink is actually called,...
(Re)public Bikes.
Me likes these bikes. I love Public bikes too. Hmmmm IP infringement?!
(I’d still put the wooden fenders on it…)

FOB CRISIS?!
Front-of-book Crisis?!!!! NOOOOO! Oh well. The NYT Sunday Magazine redesigned like two years ago and is overhauling soon again. Always “fashionably late” to a trend (read: I live under a rock until it’s two days later when I realize Olbermann has quit and the Soviet Union dissolved?!) it was the announcement that Bittman will be retiring “The Minimalist” to write a...

This guy is really great - and of course I am sure I’m the last person to hear of him.

gimme! coffee.
So people have been praising this place for ages - and I FINALLY went.
‘Twas a good cappuccino, “full bodied and robust” (but you can say that about, well, anything: ‘This meatball is really full bodied and robust,’ ‘Your aunt is really full bodied and robust,’ ‘I don’t think that this chihuahua in a bee’s costume is that full bodied...

The URL says "Nobel Prize Predictions."
The article is about a supposed hangover cure.
The mystery cure is … a cup of coffee and an aspirin.
Shocker. Also, maybe not drinking to excess (been there) and eating a bagel (been there, too)? Come on now. Sleep it off, lightweights; sleep it off.

From Panama—who you might remember from such hit plagues as Malaria, Yellow Fever, and Mariano Rivera—comes the latest attempt to cash in on the recent “Accidentally Drink Yourself Into a Coma” fad.
Introducing, Scotch whisky. In a can.
That’s right, mate. It’s twelve ounces of pure…

…This place opened on 10th st about a month ago, and it seems to be under the radar, but I’d love to eat there - they are a “roof-to-table” restaurant - and they’re about to start serving brunch. Peep the dinns menu aqui. One thing - Irish Onion soup with Cheddar? Hmmmm. (I’d eat it, probably while getting emotional - duh - with the pear salad on the side.)

– Colman Andrews, in what is arguably NYMag’s best NY Diet Entry in a long time.
Bonus points for “flagons of wine” and excessive espresso drinking (and note to self: must try Cevap Truck - @ 5th & 22nd - it’s Bosnian, and I love a good Burek).

On Monday, a new Brazilian cafe- O Cafe- will open in the old Joe Jr.’s space. Let’s hope it lives up to its predecessor’s legacy… Will report back when it opens!
[Update: The place is nice, but their lattes are 10 oz. and their caps are 6 - which is odd to me seeing as a cortado is 6 oz, a cap is traditionally 8 oz, and a latte is traditionally 12 oz. Anyhow, though they...
coming to terms.
So, a few weeks back, I found out that an entry I submitted to a competition to sum up 2010 in 6 words (a competition created/inspired by SMITH Mag) on the Leonard Lopate show was chosen as one of the winning entries. My entry, “Kanye Tweeted all the important stuff,” was tongue-in-cheek, but Mr. Lopate didn’t really care for that, methinks (eek).
Anyway, I wasn’t too...

Ethan, you just made yourself a lot of friends in the Academy.
– Funny interview on Fresh Air with the Coen Bros.
Summa Cum Chowde.
An interview with my god, Alan Sytsma, the editor of GRUB STREET on the Brian Lehrer Show. It’s about the NYC restaurant grading system and how it has/ hasn’t affected the dining experience and consumer choices. Though the interview is pretty lame, I agree with Sytsma that the grading system hasn’t affected dining - Peels is thriving and it has a B, and most places have A’s...

How early should I get to New York’s Village Halloween Parade to beat the crowd and get a good view? Asked about New York, New York
Well, I should think seeing as you’re 10 months early you’ll have a pretty good shot at being front row. Jeez, FB, get your act together, it’s 2011 not 2012.
