Edith Wharton does not listen to Rick Ross.
– Blake Eskin on last week’s New Yorker, and Other Very Important Information, in conversation with Jonathan Franzen.

on nostalgia.
I’m going to come right out and say it: I have not had a good year. Not just 2012, but the past 12 months of my life have been … turbulent. (Speaking in euphemisms here, people.) Anyway, after a not particularly good day, I need to thank the Awl for making me laugh so loud, and so hard, that it put the first smile on my face for the day.
Fast forwarding over the bleakness, I was...

A quick note re: Franzen on Wharton →
sashafrerejones:
Molly Young writes:
I enjoyed Jonathan Franzen’s essay on Edith Wharton, because I’m glad whenever anyone pays homage to the most heartbreaking novelist of all time. But I question the premise of the piece, which is that modern perceptions of Wharton’s character unfairly obstruct the enjoyment of her work.

An interesting essay on the state of women’s blogs by Molly Fischer for n+1.
If you’re interested in this lady/feminism/MPDG argument, you should check out some of the recaps for the latest New Girl - which essentially does their own version of 30 Rock’s “TGS Hates Women” episode.
How about that Galentines Day, everybody?

I want to be a fancy person from the 30s in this pyjama shirt from Steven Alan. I think I can make this dream come true with wishful thinking and a kickstarter campaign?

repro like a pro.
If you’re into prints and museums like I am, then you may or may not really enjoy spending a lot of money at 1000 Museums’ website. They sell archival prints from Museums and Libraries around the world.
I really love what’s on offer from the NYPL Archives (dream job), and considering there’s a sale on at 20x200 which ends today, I am feeling distraught in the pecuniary...

is awesome. At least, that’s her domain name, and she does kind of live up to it. I was recently looking at the Moonrise Kingdom trailer, and commented to my coworker that I thought the font was beautifully designed (this is, after all, a Wes Anderson Movie, image + sound = everything).
I began browsing through her site and I love her work. It’s a tad too delicate for my sensibilities...

Is a really wonderful poster / print site. They’re based out of Austin, and feature a large selection of designers. I am a sucker for concert poster design (see: here, and here, and here) and I got hooked with a Books poster:

because I am neither a Rastafarian nor a hippie in Portland - with all due respect to Rastafarians and hippies - I don’t frequently buy incense. I’m not really down with scented candles either. But these Armenia Papers I stumbled upon via Cool Hunting look pretty, well, cool.

shift in perception.
Thanks to following the cool Spatula blog, I found out about artist Sarah Frost’s repourposed keyboard key art. It’s like those retro typewriter cufflinks for the 21st century.
If you’re in NYC, you can see her work at the James Hotel. Reminds me of the good ol’ days when keys weren’t so teeny, and keyboards made an aural facsimile of the typewriter sound to...

silver linings.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo tweeted at me tonight! When work is rough (say customer service much?), “homelessness” imminent (I move back home tomorrow morning), and the holidays bringing not too much mirth or joy (I ate one latke this year) it’s the little things that make the difference.
Here’s to moonlight sleeping on a midnight lake, new beginnings, and New York City.

But let’s be honest, the illustration from Kagan McLeod (above) is straight paraphrasing - if you will - from Jane Mount’s Ideal Bookshelf (could be named, bookself harharhar) series (below).
… but now it actually looks like a bookshelf! Job well done, I say.
